Ombré

If you checked out celebrity hair trends over the past year, you would know that ombré was one of the most popular trends. Everyone from Jessica Biel to Drew Barrymore to Ashlee Simpson was sporting the trend. Even my own college roommate dyed her hair to make her tresses go from brown to blonde. It’s such a beautiful, carefree style and became a popular trend quickly. Although many stars have gone back to classic colors, the ombré is still alive and kicking.

The most popular ombré trend today is with nail polish. If you check out pinterest, ombré nails are everywhere and there are so many different variations. We’ve compiled a few of the different ombré nail looks here along with instructions for you to try yourself.

This week, I shared a picture of my own pink ombré nails. It’s one of my absolute favorite nail designs because it’s simple and classy, but it still catches my eye every time I look at my nails. This is another trend that Lauren Conrad originated and I duplicated. It’s one of the easiest nail trends to recreate. All you need is five different colors of nail polish in the same hue. The key is getting different shades of the color so that your nails go from dark to light and look as though they belong together. For some reason, I have an obscene amount of pink nail polishes, so using pink was the easiest way for me to do this. LC has used browns and blues, however, showing that the trend is very versatile. If you can’t find five different colors that you think look perfect together, they’ve made the trend even easier to create: the nail polish line The New Black actually sells a set of nail polish in graduating shades!

One variation of ombré that I’m desperate to try is the full nail ombré. Pictured above, this trend has different shades of one color graduating on the nail itself. Again, this is actually an easy design to create! You need about three different shades of one color, a sponge makeup brush, and a clear coat or sparkle polish for the top layer. First get one color onto the sponge (I would probably start with the lightest color). Blot the sponge at the base of your nail, going about one-third of the way up. Next, add the middle shade to the sponge and blot this color in the middle-third of your nail, gently blending it with the lighter color until it seems graduated. Add the darkest shade to the top of your nail by blotting it with the sponge and again, blend it into the middle shade for graduation. When you are satisfied with the blending of the shades, paint a clear coat over the top, or, for extra pizazz, use a sparkle polish.

Another variation of ombré is one using glitter. Although I haven’t tried this method, again, it seems relatively simple. All you need is one color of nailpolish, some glitter, and a clear top coat. The first step is to paint one layer of nail polish on each nail. The next step is where it gets a little more difficult. Paint a second layer of polish on one nail. While the nail is still wet, grab a pinch of glitter in your opposite hand. Sprinkle the glitter from the base of your nail upwards, getting the heaviest concentration at the base and allowing the graduation to trickle down up your nail. Wait a minute or two and paint the clear coat. This will further blend the glitter up your nail, so the timing is important. If you do it too soon, the graduation will be ruined. Continue these steps on the rest of your nails, and your look is complete!

This look is similar to the one above, but instead of starting at the base of the nail, you start at the tip. There are a few ways to do this. One would be to use glitter, following the directions above but starting at the tip of the nail and gradually sprinkling the glitter towards the base. Another method is similar to the second type of ombré, using a sponge to create graduation. Use the sponge to really concentrate the color at the tip of the nail and gently blot down the nail. This look is great with glitter nail polish, like above, or a regular color, like below. As always, don’t forget to put a top coat to keep your ombré looking sharp.

On a rainy day like today, having different nail trends is a great way to pass the day indoors!

The beginning of 2012 marks the end of a fabulous era for beauty. From nail art to dip-dyes, the resurgence of lipstick to bold brows, 2011 changed the beauty world, bringing back some forgotten fads while also bringing others to life. While some crazes will stay strong in 2012, others may fade or make you ask “What was I thinking?!”. As for now, we have only the fondest memories of the trends and the year we’re leaving behind.

Many people are currently blogging about what happened in 2011 in terms of fashion, beauty, and the boring stuff like politics or world events. We, however, don’t want to talk about what happened but rather who influenced us. There are certain people out there, celebrities, bloggers, stylists, etc. who have the power to change the way we see things. Who says hair should be blonde, brown, or red? Who says nails have to be a solid color? Who says braids are for little girls? These people make us question whether or not the way things are is the way they should be. Here is our list of the top beauty-influencers of 2011.

Although LC's dip-dye didn't last long, it was certainly one of the most talked about beauty trends of 2011

Lauren Conrad

After launching her beauty website, this California girl became one of the biggest influences in the beauty industry. There isn’t a trend that Lauren didn’t try. From her short-lived teal and pink dip-dye to her fabulous manicures and signature braids, LC showed women how to change it up. Her website is one of my personal beauty go-to’s, with new trends and instructions on how to do the look yourself. On TheBeautyDepartment.com, I learned how to create a half-moon manicure, any type of braid I ever wanted to learn how to make, what shade of red lipstick is right for me, and everything in between. On her personal website, LaurenConrad.com, she also gives great beauty advice, including an article on office supplies that double as beauty supplies (thanks for that!). All in all, LC is the top person to watch for beauty trends and our Most Influential Beauty Guide.

Who else could pull off pink hair and Oscar de la Renta?

Nicki Minaj

This girl from Queens knows exactly who she is in terms of her goals, music, and her style. While she’s known for crazy colorful hair and garments, Nicki is also someone who’s influenced the beauty world. Nicki is almost as famous for her many wigs (which this year included dip-dyes, hot pink, green, checkered, blonde, and blue hair) as she is her music. Aside from her wigs, Nicki has also gained fame for her makeup and nail art. She’s dabbled with double eyeliner (a hot trend), bold colorful eyeshadows, and never goes out without her signature pink lips. On top of her own beauty image, she also collaborated with OPI to create her own collection, which is amazing. The world is being taken over by Nicki, making her our Person to Watch for 2012.

This modern-day princess is a gem. No wonder William fell for her.

Kate Middleton

The Duchess of Cambridge has had quite the year. After getting married in April, Kate has remained in the spotlight and her appearance always seems to garner attention (but I guess that’s what happens when you marry a prince). Her classic style and simplicity are a refreshing break from our “more is better” culture. Kate is responsible for bringing back the half-up hairstyle, one that I personally find beautiful. Her clean face and minimal makeup is also a great influence. In our minds, Kate Middleton wins the Most Radiant Beauty award.

Katy really committed and changed her look by dying her hair pink this year.

Katy Perry

Although Katy’s marriage may be ruining the beginning of her 2012, she had an amazing 2011. Somehow while making a multi-platinum album and going on a world tour, Katy managed to be completely unique in her fashions and kept us on our toes. Her nail art is something that will go down in history: sushi nails, Prince William nails (Kate better watch her man), rhinestones, you name it and Katy did it. Not only were her nails fabulous, but her hair changed as well. Known for her jet black locks, the singer went pink in August and then chopped her hair and went to her natural blonde with lavender highlights in December. Katy is someone who makes us question why we never had food on our nails or dyed our hair crazy colors. We predict that this is only the beginning of her beauty evolution, naming her the Ever-Changing Beauty Guru.

While these are our favorite people to look to for beauty trends, there are obviously many others who are just as influencing (hello, Lady Gaga). We look forward to seeing how these women grow and what new crazes they cause in 2012.

Whether you are professional, a student, a stay-at-home mom, or a working mom… you need to relax and unwind at the end of the day.  My favorite way to end the day is to take a nice bubble bath with some fruit and ice tea.  The bubbles are not the only thing that is important about this ritual though.  I like my bubble baths to smell good and to moisturize my skin.  I’ve used all kinds of products for bubble baths from drug store brands to expensive brands.  My favorite bath products by far is from Lush.  Lush sells wonderful bath items that smell delicious and are made from very high quality ingredients.  They have an array of different scents and for bubble baths, I always get two products to put into my bath tub: a bubble bar and a bath bomb.  You put in the bubble bar first which dissolves very quickly and is meant to create a lot of bubbles and moisturize your skin.  Then, you accompany the bubble bar with the bath bomb which starts fizzing when it comes in contact with hot water to help the bubble bar create even more bubbles!

My favorite bubble bar is the Flosty Gritter because it’s glittery and it is lavender scented.  Lavender is a calming scent so not only will this bubble bar make your bath water pretty, but it’ll be aromatherapy as well!

My favorite bath bomb is Honey Bee because it smells AMAZING.

Your Poor Feet

Living in New York City, my feet are always in pain and crying for some treatment.  I probably walk up to five miles a day going to everywhere I need to go whether that is to meet friends or to go to work (okay, that might be an overstatement, but that’s how I feel at the end of the day).  Although I would love to go to a spa and get a foot massage, I really don’t have the time for that nor the money.  I would need a foot massage once a week for how tired they are.  The Body Shop offers a miracle worker product called the Peppermint Cooling Foot Spray ($10).  I discovered it a few years ago and gave it to my mother as a present.  My mother being a CEO of a very successful consulting company, she’s wearing heels from 9am-5pm every weekday or even longer.  I gave her this spray, but I never tried it myself until a few months ago when I went into The Body Shop for fun.  I tested the foot spray on my boyfriend at the mall and he absolutely Loved it despite all the complaining he had done when I told him to take off his shoes and socks in the middle of the store (Haha, true story).  These days, I’ve found out that in a matter of just a few months, I’ve practically finished the whole product!  I cannot live without the spray.  It is so refreshing for my foot and makes my feet smell nice and minty.  You can even put it in the fridge to make it even cooler, but based on my experience, the spray is great even without being in the fridge.

If you try out the foot spray and you think it’s great, you should definitely get The Body Shop Peppermint Cooling Leg Gel ($14) as well.  It does the same thing as the foot spray, but it’s for your legs and the product works amazing as well.  It revives your legs back up again, ready for long walks.  What I normally will do is stop by my house before I go out to meet my friends after work to take three minutes to just spray my feet and rub some cooling gel on my legs so that I’m ready for a night out in the city.  Plus, the last thing men want to hear about is how painful your shoes are or how tired you are.

Purchase them at any The Body Shop store or online: www.thebodyshop.com

I love getting cute makeup bags.  I always get cute makeup (love Benefit packaging) that’s always packaged nicely, so why would I put my makeup in anything else than a cute one?  I never have problems finding cute makeup bags because they’re everywhere.  However, there is one issue that I have with most of them.  They aren’t machine-washable.  This is crucial to me because somehow my eyeliner, foundation, you name it, always gets everywhere in my makeup bag.  When I found out about the RuMe bags, I was very excited.  All RuMe products are machine washable and they have the cutest prints to offer.  My personal favorite that works amazingly as a makeup bag is this:

At $4.50 each, they are so affordable.  They were originally created for the purpose of replacing Ziploc bags to help the environment, but they are great as makeup bags as well.  Also, no more worries about products getting all over the inside of the bag because it’s machine washable!  Just pop it in the washer with the rest of your laundry.  Lastly, wanted to show you another one of my favorites:

You can purchase them at the following locations: The Container Store, Amazon, RuMe Online, Neiman Marcus

Have you ever gotten a pedicure and then gotten an “emergency phone call” from either your sister, friend, child, or boss?  Yup, I’m talking about the phone calls that are never really an emergency, but you have to leave the nail salon anyway because you have to comfort your friend who recently dumped her boyfriend.  Or it could be your child who half way through the school day, realized he forgot his homework assignment at home and needs it right away.  Well, it’s always been annoying trying to run out of the nail salon in the flimsy pedicure shoes that the salons give out.  Somehow, they always seem to fall apart while you walk to your car or some other disaster.  Hence, Alissa Kraisosky, the owner and designer of Summer Jasmines has come up with the solution!  Let me introduce you to the revolutionary pedicure shoes:

Now you can run out of the salon whenever without worrying that your new pedicure gets ruined!

Best Eyeliner

In my experience, eyeliner has been one of the hardest makeup products to use.  There’s so much precision involved and it always seems that my eyeliner ends up on my cheeks during these hot and humid months of summer.  Although I’ve mastered the art of applying my eyeliner every morning, it takes me a lot of concentration and scrutiny for me to get it just right.  However, since I’ve discovered Bobbi Brown Long-wear Gel Eyeliner, now I spend only a few seconds to apply my eyeliner.  It’s waterproof and it comes in many different colors.  At $21, it is definitely not cheap, but completely worth the fact that it decreases the time you need to spend on getting the perfect eyes every morning when you’re in a rush.  Not to mention, at the end of the night, a lot of times, it is rather difficult to take waterproof eyeliner off even with the best eye makeup remover, but Bobbi Brown comes off hassle-free.

Smell Edible

Moisturizing is very important no matter what season.  In the winter, your skin gets super dry from the weather and it’s really important to moisturize.  In the summer, your skin gets damaged from the sun so it’s really important to moisturize.  It’s always a challenge though to find what body moisturizer works the best.  So many times I have bought a bottle of lotion based on how good it smelled and then realized that on the moisturizing factor, it did absolutely nothing for me.  However, there has been one item that has never failed me and has been my favorite for years.  The body butters from The Body Shop are just irresistible!  They smell so great and they do what all body moisturizers should do.  Some of my favorite ones are:

Strawberry

Japanese Cherry Blossom

Moringa

Satsuma

Each one is $20 and they smell deeeeeeeeeeeeliciouis!  You can find them at The Body Shop or buy them online at www.thebodyshop.com

I love lip gloss and I often cannot go out my door without lip gloss on my lips.  Without it, I feel… naked.  I like the thought that my lips are nice and shiny and highlighted, especially since I have such thin lips.  However, the problem with lip gloss is that my boyfriend absolutely hates the way that it tastes when I give him a kiss.  I’ve got to say, some lip gloss out there are not the most tasty things to consume.  I remember I had one that sounded delicious, but ended up tasting like I was consuming soap each time I accidentally licked my lips.  I don’t even want to talk about how painful it was in the back of my throat whenever I accidentally consumed a bit of the lip-plumping lip gloss that contained ingredients that made the lips feel tingly.  Anyway, point is, you don’t have to put up with any of this because there are products out there that are date-friendly.  The last thing you want to do when “the moment” to kiss is coming to be like, “Uhh… sorry, can you give me some time to wipe this lip gloss off myself?”  It’s already awkward enough already if it’s the first date or the first kiss that “the moment” is coming, but that statement just makes it worse.  Check these out:

Yves Saint Laurent GLOSS VOLUPTÉ SHEER SENSUAL GLOSS STICK SPF 9

YSL is pricey at a whopping $30 per lip gloss stick, but they’re great for dates because stick types are significantly less sticky than the ones that come in tubes.  They don’t taste awful either!  Just don’t lose it…

Rosebud Perfume Co. Strawberry Lip Balm

At $7, it is much more affordable and not sticky.  It smells amazing and I’m sure your date won’t mind the taste of this one.

Lancome Juicy Tube

If you must go for the full gloss, the Lancome Juicy Tube is the way to go.  At mid-price, they are $18 each and smell great.  The Lancome scents are not too artificial and nauseating like many other lip gloss brands out there.

All of these products can be purchased at www.sephora.com

Before the Tan

Summer is the season for tan skin.  I love to tan outdoors, but I know that the healthy way to get the sexy, golden brown skin is either spray tanning or using self-tanners.  Most of the Haute PR girls all use self-tanners to keep their skin glowing.  Although exfoliating is an annoying, grueling process, it is an absolute must before going to get a spray tan or using a self-tanner.  It ensures that the color will go on your skin evenly and nicely.  The best exfoliants that are out there are the ones with sugar in their ingredients.  My suggestion would be to use fresh Brown Sugar Body Scrub.  It has 4.6 stars out of 5 on Sephora so it’s definitely a nation-wide favorite and it smells amazing!

Even if you don’t spray tan or use self-tanners, you should use this product to exfoliate and hydrate your skin.  This product is known for its amazing moisturizing capabilities.

  • 7 oz: $38
  • 14.1 oz: $65

I know, it’s a bit pricey, but it’s worth it.
